Singles Going Steady: New Album Releases Reviewed For Week Of November 19th, 2012

To Anyone – 2NE1 – This all girl group comes from the same stable that brought you PSY and BIGBANG, four part harmonies over synth and beats and sometimes ballad and more often dance tracks. At its best, "Can't Nobody" and the rickety "Clap Your Hands" it is pretty good. More often, it is a little obvious – Grade: B

Quatro – Tito Puente – Four albums from the mid-50s by the late great Latin jazz master and the horns never stop exploding. Wonderful but not for beginners such as myself. It's like starting your Armstrong collection with "Meets Oscar Peterson". However, if you are a fan you will flip out over Tito's bongo playing on stuff like "Night Ritual" – Grade: A

The World From The Side Of The Moon – Phillip Phillips – I can like him over a song, but I can like Dave <Mathews over a song (who he sings like) and Train over a song, with whom he shares a producer. Over an album? Deadly – Grade: C-

Chocomel Daze Live 1987 – Dinosaur Jr – It sounds like a boot with all the background chatter and foreground clatter, but a great boot you've hoarded for decades – Grade:A

Woman to Woman – Keyshia Cole – Maybe it's me, but I like Cole and I am not insane about anything of this. Generic r&b with a hip hop beat. Now when have I written those words before? Grade: B-

Death Proof – Kate Nash – Five songs, all great, Kate Nash feels like the great lost woman of Brit chicks in the second half of the 2010s and on this ridiculously excellent EP, she deserves to be right back at the top of the charts. Dig the Kinks cover – Grade: A

Global Warnings – Pitbull – In which Mr. Worldwide runs out of beats, which happens, and charm, which is much more alarming. His first bad album is generic dance which never finds its way – Grade: C-

Pink Reloaded – The Re-Up – Nicki Minaj  Overextends herself and then some, the Beenie Man song ain't bad, the Chris Brown is OK… otherwise whatever – Grade: C+

Greatest Hits – Kelly Clarkson –  Sure a lot of hits from the early AI alumni. And most of them are quite good, and some of them are better then that. The new one is among the better ones – Grade: B

We Are Love – Il Vivo. Right your own review but start with the phrase, if you don't like opera this is for you – Grade: D+
