Shit Robot: James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem’s Friend DJ Magic

Dublin born Marcus Lambkin has been DJing Stateside since 1992… that would be 18 years if you are keeping track.

He has worked at such seminal houses of dance as Brownies and Dave The Robots (one of the hottest clubs of the era).

Then Marcus formed Plant Records -a dance record label and who was below him? James Murphy, who was building a studio and running the tiny label DFA Record.

Marcus helped Murphy build the cabinets for the studio and they became friends and so when it came time for Marcus to release his first album as Shit Robot, the brilliantly named From The Cradle To The Rave dropping September 21st, he turn to DFA Records.

I have only heard one song but according to the press release: “Murphy co-wrote and sings the lyrics of the album opening track, “Tuff Enuff.” It was Murphy’s challenge to Marcus about the upcoming birth of his daughter. From there, the album moves on to “I Found Love,” which recalls the vocal style of Barry White. “Losing My Patience” features vocals from Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor while LCD Soundsystem’s Nancy Whang adds her sultry voice to ‘Take ‘Em Up.’

The one song I have heard, the seven minute plus “I Found Love” gave me a refresher course in my deep affection for pure techno. Against a nagging synth hook, drums slash and burn like lightening strikes. Best pure dance I’ve heard this year that doesn’t have Trouble And Bass fixed to it.

Don’t know if Shit Robot (apparently “Shit” is the new “the”) but I’ll keep you updated.
