So the first thing to notice about Shinobi Ninja after not seeing them in a coupla of years is that D.A. .has a beard. What? Unbelievably enough, the baby faced lead singer and rapper of Shinobi Ninjas, has muscles and sinews and a beard! But then wait a second, so do twin brothers guitarist and drummer Maniac Mike and Terminator Dave. Round our way we particularly adore Dave since he once wrote an article for us on his drumming influences for rock nyc.
Baby G doesn’t have a beard! And neither does new bassist Alien Lex! Their DJ Axis Powers was nowhere to be seen but on the brief, eight minute, three song set perhaps they gave him the day off. If so, nobody else came close to getting one. Sandwiched between two rappers at Arlene Grocery’s on Saturday, September 14th, 2013, they really were incredible. Nobody in their right minds wants to follow Shinobi, with Dave a packet of dynamite pounding on the drums like his arms might fall off, and Alien Alex looked as though he was gonna smash his guitar he was so intense. The audience looked a little shell shocked too, after the mini set the MC had a dazed look on his face.
But Shinobi have been getting to that place for years now and I think they are just beyond belief, an intense hard rocking, hip hop standard bearing blast of energy that puts all your sense on high alert.
Afterwards I spoke to Mike, he told me the band have an hour long gig coming up on October 11th, 2013. A luxury for them to get to really spread their wings.
