Say Anything released their new album. Anarchy, My Dear. and at first I didn't like it at all. It's nothing like their previous albums passion-wise and it felt lame. However, it's totally grown on me and it's the only thing I've been listening to for the past 24 hours."Say Anything" is a ridiculously good song. It's just so catchy and I can't help but sing along when I hear it. The lyrics are totally brilliant, too. It's more than a love song, it's a unique ballad of an amorous boy. It never gets old, simply because I find another new thing to love each and every time. What I've recently started to love is the bassist. The bass is so great in this song, and is a nice touch to the tune.
My favorite song on the album is "Night's Song". The very first part of the song, especially the way Bemis sings "But I've got Randy Newman in my head…" makes me completely drawn in. The tune is flawless and the instruments all play the melody. The way they all blend together really seals the deal and makes me adore it. Each and every word, every note, just are all so natural and melt into a wonderfully composed song.
The title track "Anarchy, My Dear" is gorgeous. It's something new for Say Anything, but it most certainly doesn't lack the usual wit and raw passion of one of their older tunes. I don't know what about it makes me love it so much, but I can't stop listening to it. It just feels so honest and that's really refreshing. Since it feels like ages since their last album, a new dose of Say Anything is something that I've been craving, and this tune provides that and more.
With the deluxe edition of Anarchy, My Dear you receive a short documentary if you buy it through iTunes. Bemis calls it his favourite Say Anything album so far, and seems very proud of it. He talks of his bipolarity and draws similarities between A,MD and …Is A Real Boy.
Bemis gushes about the tune "Say Anything", and even says that there isn't a single thing he wouldn't do to remain with his wife. Seeing this side of him, so sweet and caring, was nice and brought a smile to my face because it was kind of unexpectedly personal in a really good way.
He says how anarchy is a way of freeing your mind, questioning society and its brainwashing.
The record and the documentary really sum up what Say Anything is really about, and the record shows off not only their musical and lyrical talent, but it also reminded me why they're one of my favourite bands of all time.
Definitely invest in Anarchy, My Dear.
"The whole album is a love song to this way of living, to not being controlled" -Max Bemis
