As stories go, this reminds me of the one in the UK back in the 70s where two A&R guys bought out the Pretenders first single causing it to appear at number one and getting them tons of press.
Unknown entity Sam Adams -a white rapper from Boston, entered Itunes Hip Hop charts at nimber one. The problem? Nobody was buying it, nobody was stealing it, and, according to Bob Lefsetz, nobody else -Wal Mart or Amazon, saw similar sales.
Ergo? Management was buying itself in order to move the needle.
