Sade is still at number one on the US charts after three weeks and is nearing the platinum mark.
A success that suggests a coupla things.
1) grown ups by CDs more often than kids do.
2) there is a middle aged audience not being catered to by the mass market
3) This audience doesn’t want nostalgia -or not quite nostalgia. They want to be catered to by quality AOR, reminiscent but not replicating the past.
4) If you cater to this audience you can sell a lot of CDs so
5) Part of the reason for the catering of the music business is the majors have got their target audience wrong because
6) “Tik Tok” selling a million downloads is less successful than Sade selling even only 500,000 copies.
7) So anybody with any sense would be trying to figure how to sell the Kelley Ryan’s of the world to a large audieunce
8) And nobody has any sense
