Ah yes, sorrow. It’s the meat and potatoes of great pop. Sad songs about happy things. But what really breaks our heart? Or at least what do we listen to when we’re broken hearted?
The old Cole Porter makes me wanna weep my heart heart out. It’s not that sad really, I mean, cmon talk about an overreation. “there’s no love song finer” and then, and then, and then it moves down an octave, “but how strange the change from major to minor”. Ouch.
Another. Ryan Adam’s “crossed Out Name”. Not his epitaph but absolutely mine, “for everything there is a word, for everything but this…” “I don’t pray I shower and say goodnight to myself”, “I wish I could tell you just how I’m hurt”. Happiness. Who needs it?
One more? Hank Williams. “Today i passed you on the street and my heart fell at your feet…” . How much can this lille ol’ heart take? Another day, another post…
