Rufus Wainwright And Me by Iman Lababedi

Yesterday I invested $41 in a partial view tix to see Rufus Wainwright at Carnegie Hall. I’ve seen him before but only as part of a larger concert.

As a classically train, keyboard based, high/low culture opera loving and writing baritone with a very gay voice, Rufusis an acquired taste who, when in full depression, is like Sondheim circa “Passion” only not as good. As an opera writer he is a good tunesmith and as a gut wrencher he shows his all.
And yet… there is something fascinating about the guy. He is hard to listen to but whenever I do I am glad I made the effort.
And he will get better.
Still, I prefer Martha.
