Ricky Martin Wins GLAAD Award

Congrats to Ricky Martin on receiving the Vito Russo Award from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

According to Billboard: “The award is presented to an openly LGBT media professional who made a significant difference in promoting equal rights. The 39-year-old Puerto Rican pop singer announced last year that he is gay. GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios called it “a game changer for many gay and transgender Latino children.”

A friend of mines sister was in the chorus of Les Miz back in the day, and when Ricky hit with “Livin’ La Vida Loca”, told me he was gay. Alright by me, but that’s a helluva long time to be in the closet, and while it is easier said than done, I don’t think anybody could care less now whereas they could now.

But I really didn’t consider the ramifications for gay Latinos. That it helps to know that one of your biggest stars is gay and is not ashamed of something that must be so confusing for children who are gay.
