This past Saturday I was at a banging backyard bk bash, involving a bunch of kickass, up coming artists and emcees. Naturally I posted up in best spot, high up on a ledge to get a good view, ( as seen in pic) I am guy with hat standing next to new friend, Vanessa. But most important, is the older gentleman standing behind me on other side of the wall looking in.
This was a bit odd, a backyard full of 20 something year old hipsters rockin out to some alt/rock hiphop bands, emcees, and DJs, and here are two 50 something year old Jamaicans looking on and enjoying the shit out of themselves. I wrote that last sentence before I discovered that George is actually 60, dam bud, you look more than good, you look greeaaattt.
I befriended the man to the left and found out it was none other than THE Reggae George, straight off the boat from Jamaica, mon.
Reggae George was quite popular in the early 80’s, making two cds, with such hits as “Political Outcast” and “Fig Root”.
One music blog I stumbled upon, claimed that Reggae George had in fact died in the late 90’s here in NY, I have come to bring some truth to the table my friends, Reggae George lives on!
Not the best picture, but you can tell its the same man from the album cover, as in the picture I took this past Saturday, ( WHAT, Im like a reporter now and junk, solving mysterious like blues clues.)
He once recorded on Marley’s, offshoot label to Tuff Gong, 56 Hope Road, a nice and artistic album, unfortunately not so good in sales department.
I’m glad to know that even the guys that were rocking it before i was born, still love music and can enjoy a bunch of kids jamming out in their back yards, skating on half pipes, and busting free styles.
