I’ve been convinced for years that there’s a direct correlation between good (and more importantly, interesting) music being written during the years under leadership by Republican/Tory leaders. And conversely, that we always see safe, formulaic garbage during the years that Democrat/Labour leaders are at the helm.
The brooding, artistic youth, when they feel subjugated and unrepresented by leadership seem to just make better music. They’re forced to see how they don’t like the world and appear more eager to write about it. When they’re happy, hopey, and feel like the country will probably do okay without them and their guitar, we see less heartfelt stuff.
There are just as many bands that would contradict my statement as bands that support it… but I think of it as Interpol in 2001 and Lady Gaga in 2009.
So here’s to David Cameron and maybe some good music coming from the UK again. As long as you don’t send us any more Coldplays, we won’t complain.
