Back in the early 80s, when nyc was the center of the rock pop universe, Alan Betrock was discovering everybody on the planet on Shake Records, and the population of Athens, Ga moved en masse to the lower east side with Big Star’s Radio City tucked into their suitcase and changed the face of semi-popular again, I loved pop music with a passion I am happy to lavish on Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and Miniature Tigers.
Both of these bands have new albums out.
Both of these albums can be mentioned int he same breath as Stands For decibles.
I missed Miniature Tigers (don’t go on stage past midnight you jerks) but I plan to see SSLYBY October 2nd at the Living Room. A first listen to Let It Sway proves that, at the very least, they have learnt the first rule of pop music: consistency. Every song kills but the title track and “Critical Drain” are tiny diamonds in our memories (Conor Oberst reference pop pickers).
MT are a little more of the modern dance, electronic playground of the pure and somewhat obscure and weirdly text wild modern lyricism, SSSLYBY, are the update on all those bands I loved 25 years ago.
Get both albums now… I’ll wait.
