Promise Her Anything by Iman Lababedi

Bobbie Gentry had a gentle rasp of pain in her vocals that added a dimension to the Bacharah David “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again”. . Unfortunately, it muddies the water of the Braodway musical song.
I saw a revival at the Roundhouse a coupla years ago of Bacharah and David’s only foray onto Broadway, the immensely successful “Promises, Promises”.
Based upon Billy Wilder’s “The Apartment” about a guy who lends out his apartment to his married bosses so they can trysts, and thereby he can move ahead, it all comes to a head when he falls for one of the girls.
The revival I saw worked very well and the 1969 West End production, with Tony Roberts and Betty Buckley as the girl, musta been awesome.
The highlight the Bobbie Gentry song, a hit for Dionne Warwick,. Dionne -a perfect foil for Bacharah’s complex melodic lines, had a hit. But Bobbie Gentry touched deeper.
I dunno -I love em both…
