Pretty Lights New Product! by Woody Fuller

Woody and Crew Hang With Pretty Lights former drummer: let that be a lesson to us all

Pretty Lights dropped a new album, YESSS!!, finally some new tracks to add to my “rollin/crunk/dance party” playlist on itunes, one which I play at least once per day. 25,000 EPs were downloaded in the first five minutes of posting.

“Spilling Over Every Side” is a bit different from Derek Vincent Smith’s past albums, but still delivers whatever it was that made me fall in love in the very beginning. Not as much whoomping as early P Lights, but each song is still pumped full of premium dance beats, most novel, some reminiscent of works past. PL is starting to find it’s niche in the music world, fine tuning his sound, building off of what works, and taking it to a new, fresh level.

Sticking too much with what has worked for an artist in the past can sometimes be their demise, especially in the early stages, like the one that PL is currently in. HOWEVER with the perfectly mixed combo of using what has made them unique and special in past, with the experimentation of some new sounds and samples, Pretty Lights just put out their best album to date.

Using some wicked awesome samples of horns and other instruments, previously uncharted territory, ” A Million Tomorrows” is one of my fave tracks off Spilling Over Every Side, chill enough to write to, but will still get me dancing a bit on my subway commute to work.

Other dope songs are “Hot Like Dimes,” most congruent with ‘old’ Pretty Lights, definitely a hot dance song, and an even better concert song when combined with some physical pretty lights, guess I’ll HAVE to go to yet another show.. Shucks!

“Forever Lost”, another top album track, also brings in some sampled horns, piano, and has quite the edgy vibe to it, but fuck it, Derek Vincent Smith can do whatever he wants. Luckily for us, he wants to make music. And what great music he happens to be making and giving away for freeee.

This seems like a great time to mention that all of Pretty Lights music is available for FREE, donations are highly appreciated obviously, but what a great way to get your music out there. Then just tour like mad all year to make money, which is what they do. Genius idea, more artists should do it. Just my 2 cents on free music. It’s great.

In conclusion, great album, go check it out, fo free online, support good music, and try and catch a live show if possible. Peace

ps if Iman decides to post picture I sent, its of Pretty Lights drummer, Cory Eberhard, (who has since been replaced by none other than Adam Deitch,) with my friends and I after a show in Wilmington in 2009.. we are a bit sweaty. I am the one wearing a Pretty Lights shirt, a shirt I somehow managed to acquire via trade for whatever shirt I wore into the show that night.
