Rock NYC has gotten quite highbrow this week throwin down some heavy duty opinions amongst the pics of Taylor. Don’t worry, pretty soon we will be back to swooning and bitching like usual but as we start the new year we apparently are trending to some rather interesting social issues. I’m going to tackle politics in music.
Seems to me that musicians have always attained a level of fame and then used that to jam whatever they believe down your throat in hopes of getting you on board with their latest cause.
Presidential candidates get endorsed by musicians…cuz lets face it John Mayer knows whats good for America more than any scholar could. Is there really someone out there who said ‘I really love Your Body is a Wonderland, I’m gonna vote for whomever Mayer does’? I’m pretty sure yes. I don’t really want to learn what the candidates platform is but if they like “My Humps” then they must be cool..right? I
Sport Stars do it too but really Justin Pedroia doesn’t have the captive audiences to step up to the pitchers mound and say ‘Derek, Imma let you bat in a minute but first let me say you should all vote…”
But Pete Wentz sure as hell has a crowd to yell “Vote Obama” too, too bad none are old enough to vote.
I was running late to work today and had a local radio station on interviewing a politician to be. Why? I want to hear the news, the weather and maybe a song by Blue October, I don’t want to hear you talk to me about sticking it to big government. So now its Rock and Roll radio too. Thanks, wheres my iPod.
What I cant understand is how big must your ego be to think you can tell me what I want for my or my child’s future? You are an entertainer. Your job is too entertain me. I don’t really care who you’ll endorse nor should anyone else. If you’re a guitarist g’head and tell me to use a Fender. As a cook tell me to use a non stick spray. Race car driver? Oil is cool, but are any of these people qualified to offer up a sales pitch in politics? Is Bono a US Citizen? Moby, shut up you haven’t released anything worth listening to since Play. Get off your ego boxes shut the hell up and write something to entertain me so I can pay money to you and Ticketmaster Nation and pay your mortgage.
Go Ahead play the Innagural Ball, every party needs some tunes but really shut up already. Voting was a private act so hush hush you hid in a curtained booth. Now get up and yell it, cuz everyone deserves to be heard?
But this is where it gets a bit strange.
Truth is our idols can sway us. We are easily swayed and that ‘young vote’ really doesn’t know what to do. At 18 MTV is up there ass telling them to register to vote, to Rock the Vote.. how about LEARN to vote? America is a great country built on the backs of the men and women who learned and believed who had a clear idea of what their country should be. I’m not saying they were right or wrong but they pulled that lever cuz Joe Politico was at the Grange Hall not because he could chill with the piano player at the saloon.
We’re lazy, we’re confused, we have given up. Few Americans try anymore, too busy saying government is corrupt anyway. Well things cant get better if you allow Miley Cyrus to become your advisor.
