''I find it all a bit safe and boring at the minute. There's not enough proper fucking attitude. People are not saying it like they really mean it.
''We need another musical revolution, which has got to come from the roots upwards. I'm waiting for that to happen, for the younger generation to shake it up again because it fucking needs it.''
"That whole nostalgia thing doesn't do anything for me. Reforming The Jam definitely isn't for me. I like what I'm doing now. I'm moving on.''
That's Paul Weller talking to NME as quoted by contactmusic.com
I am not sure what he means. There is a revolution going on today, if Bruce had the slightest idea of what he was talking about he might have mentioned that that at the heart of him using loops and samples is kids like my friend Alec making beats. Making beats, the illegitimacy of sound, is the same as the Jam nicking Who riffs. It is the street level creation of new music. And it is the essence of where music is.
In the world of music many more people have the ability to break through today but therefore many fewer will break through. Just the sheer number of bands out there is baffling. There is no way to find a middle ground for it. Instead, you will find little islands of outrage and bands that live in semi-enclosures of like minded musical communities.
As far as shocking your parents, how about Odd Future? All they do is shock their parents. But is that what he wants? Calling gays fags isn't revolutionary but calling your world old for the hell it is: that's where revolutions start.
