Sure, “Paranoia” is just a cool little “B” flick about industrial espionage in the cellular phone industry, and yeah, it is inept enough with Liam Hemsworth, the Australian actor in search of a suit, as a desk jockey at a big corporation blackmailed into spying for a rival, but it has two things going for it, Harrison Ford and especially Gary Oldham. Ford is pretty good as fist in the silk glove, but Gary is absolutely great as a cockney software genius who left Ford’s company after being denied partnership and is out to get him. Amber Heard is lovely as the lovely love interest and Richard Dreyfuss does what he can with the iffy role of the father. Apparently, Dreyfuss instilled values in the boy. They aren’t really visible here.
It looks pretty and wealthy enough, and I wouldn’t mind Liam’s apartment if I could get my hands on it but the movie stretches credibility so well passed the breaking point that it becomes hard to ignore even in a “B” movie. And the action really isn’t at all. Australian Direction isn’t really that much of an action movie make, I mean he did “21” but you really know him for “Legally Blonde” and that sort of threatless 90 minutes is what he is best at: harmless, attractive fantasy.
Rotten Tomatoes gave it an astoundingly low 4% approval rating. What? Did they lie about WMD in Iraq or something?
Music: The score by Junkie XL is about what you’d imagine from the pro behind “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Man Of Steel” and the songs as they are antiseptic product, the EDM in a club scene is lam.
