Owl City Not For The Birds by Helen Bach

get on down
Forgive me for what I’m about to say but here is proof that I too can have a change of heart.

I have a habit now of googling rocknyc for whats been said about a band so I don’t become redundant and I notice aside for a few snide remarks and some lists there really hasnt been much said on Owl City.

I’m guilty of a WTF email on them (on November 6th to be exact). To me they/he were nothing more than a rip off of Death Cab for Cutie. It was eerie in its obvious vocal rip off of Ben Gibbard of DCFC. Well that was ‘Fireflys’, a happy ditty that becons you to take hugs from bugs or some other crap

Last night, I see everywhere that Owl City is on the meglopoliss ‘Alice in Wonderland’ soundtrack and figure …again open minded in 2010…. I would give them/him another shot.

“Cave In”- is a great song and I figured out (again)what my deal is– Is he singing into something electronic? Has a techno twitter. Its distinct but its now pleasant.

The songs from the cd Ocean Eyes have a predictable but happy beat, danceable if your so inclined. Theres no deep meaning here, there no real substance. Its almost like a musical Pixi Stix, its happy it leaves a fun residue but really you couldn’t survive on it. This is the sort of spring time music youd sway to while sitting on a bridge over a trickling brook dangling your feet. Silly visual isn’t it. Feeling groovy, ‘The Bird and The Worm’ is just plain positive and happy (again with the freakin happy..jeez). Really Owl City isn’t the enemy at all.

I like them. If you re feeling angst you’ll want to kick the crap out of the speakers cuz this guy is Mr Sunshine, sweet enough to make you gag.

But if you woke on the right side of the bed, you may just jump on board, a kick of sugar never really hurt.
