Everybody loved the Sugarhill Gang, right? “Rapper’s delight” might have been a novelty hit but it was a novelty hit that opened the floodgates for rap and hip hop. The Gang deserved a long career on the nostagia circuit after that but they are having trouble getting one as they fight over, what else, royalties. Wonder Mike and Master G are suing Sylvia Robinson for six million bucks in royalties. Robinson claims she was the brains behind the band and anyway Sony Corp owns the rights to the song.
Bloomberg reports : “Sugarhill Gang still performs at music award shows and other venues without Wright or O’Brien. The group’s current members are Joey Robinson, who joined in 1984, Warren Moore, who joined in 2005, and the group’s third original member, “Big Bank Hank” Henry Jackson, according to Robinson”
