Watching the first episode of BBC America’s cult fave “Skins” on DVD, I thought the soundtrack of alt rock semi-obscurities was interesting without being fascinating, but the scene where a main character, Tony, auditions for the male lead singer in the choir of an all girl private high school.
There are two versions of the scene floating around of actor Nicholas Hoult (you won’t recognize him as the boy from “About A Boy”) performance. In the first he sings a straight up, quite good, version of the Lerner and Lowe “The Street Where you Live”.
In the second, listen to it below, he sings a parody version called “I Am Indiscreet When You Leave”. This is to the original what the Rutles “Ouch” is to the Beatles “Help”.
I have no idea who did the rewrite or even if it is a true standard. My bet? Probably creator and writer Bryan Eisley…
