New Songs Review Week Of June 21st, 2010: Heavy Up The Bass by Iman Lababedi

Love the Way You Live (feat. Rihanna) – Eminem – No, no, no, no, no. I did not say every song on the album, I said some of it sucked bad and even if it doesn’t, and this is a great rap and Rihanna kills on the chorus, it is still not as good as the good stuff. Still, it’s a lot better than how low on the feel bad scale this album is gonna go.

Turnt Out – The-Dream -That Prince like falsetto sure sounds a product of the studio and the song is an r&b homage just about. But by a guy who knows from pop and homages. The hook aint ella but it aint as bad as the crap on his first solo album.

King Of Anything – Sara Bareilles – Impressive as it gets, she’s like an unquirky Regina Spektor: a singer songwriter of the first order though maybe a touch too professional for my taste.

Ridin’ Solo – Keith Sweat – I like Keith Sweat , he is a soul man’s booty caller in a line going back past the late great Pendergrast though maybe more middlin’ -more child of babyface, right… This is deep rhythm plus a touch of over orchestration. Nive voice though, he can stretch that contralto.

Tightrope (Wondamix) (feat B.o.B and Lupe Fiasco) – In which B.o.B. returns the favor with a heavy on the rapping remix. Seems a little pointless but I am too much of dance fiend to want much more off my music than more bass.

Crossfire – Brandon Flowers – Helen thinks I overstate the case for this as a theological tract about romance -maybe that’s what you always get from the killer leaders big bang boom sound. But I really feel this is about faith on some level… more than just second imagery. SONG OF THE WEEK.

Stay – Miley Cyrus – Geez , you are no longer a virgin. We got it.

The Fire – The Roots and John Legend – Am I the only bloke who finds this band unbearable? I don’t like the faux cool shmuck, the one who used to smirk his way through SN, either It is so dowdy, so dark, so rhythm uncool and with a great singer in tow they have no idea what to do with him. God I hate this band.

Good To be me – Uncle Kracker – You know what? No. This is not good. The song is Ok, or would be if they gave it a little backbone, and if Kid Rock sang lead all the way through it.

Flood (Savage Flavor remix) – Jars Of Clay – Nice sentiment, for charity, good christian boys. Now if only they were P.O.D.

Follow Us – Big Boi and Vonnegutt – The worst of the big three songs though not that bad entirely. Sorta like indie rock with a reggae back beat. Good rap.

Ease On Down The Road – Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones – Somebody, I think a Boyz Noize, should heavy up the bass on this. It is a really good disco beat four years before Thriller.
