New Politics is one of those typical pop bands that try to push and be a little edgy, and there’s nothing wrong with that, they have their niche and their fan base who enjoy what they do. Â However, you can really only survive on your mass appeal for so long, especially when you haven’t quite made it yet. Â The band is touring with Fall Out Boy, which is going to push them even further up the ladder. Â But, unfortunately, if their recent material is just like their release, “Tonight You’re Perfect”, there’s gonna be some cringey moments.
It’s like One Direction could’ve written the song.. Honestly, it’s incredibly cliche and a massive step down from their other works that I can remember. Â They weren’t always so mainstream-sounding. Â “Harlem” was even a little funkier. Â Nonetheless, “Tonight You’re Perfect” is just disappointing. Â There’s no redeeming factor at all, other than the video. Â It’s a tune that’s gonna be in a thousand commercials, because it sounds like every other song in commercials. Â The cinematography of the video is lovely, expansive, and big-budget- but doesn’t impress me at all.
It’s essentially bits and pieces of things that have been done numerous times before in significantly better ways. Â The snapshots, the indie-film vibe, the playing with fireworks in the middle of nowhere…none of it even keeps your attention. Â It’s an entirely plastic representation of what the band used to be. Â Sell outs? Nah, not really. Â Mostly, they’re just falling flat and losing all of their personality. Â Looks like New Politics is running out of tricks.
