New Politics is one of those typical pop bands that try to push and be a little edgy, and there’s nothing wrong with that, they have their niche and their fan base who enjoy what they do. However, you can really only survive on your mass appeal for so long, especially when you haven’t quite made it yet. The band is touring with Fall Out Boy, which is going to push them even further up the ladder. But, unfortunately, if their recent material is just like their release, “Tonight You’re Perfect”, there’s gonna be some cringey moments.
It’s like One Direction could’ve written the song.. Honestly, it’s incredibly cliche and a massive step down from their other works that I can remember. They weren’t always so mainstream-sounding. “Harlem” was even a little funkier. Nonetheless, “Tonight You’re Perfect” is just disappointing. There’s no redeeming factor at all, other than the video. It’s a tune that’s gonna be in a thousand commercials, because it sounds like every other song in commercials. The cinematography of the video is lovely, expansive, and big-budget- but doesn’t impress me at all.
It’s essentially bits and pieces of things that have been done numerous times before in significantly better ways. The snapshots, the indie-film vibe, the playing with fireworks in the middle of nowhere…none of it even keeps your attention. It’s an entirely plastic representation of what the band used to be. Sell outs? Nah, not really. Mostly, they’re just falling flat and losing all of their personality. Looks like New Politics is running out of tricks.
