Wish You Were here – Avril Lavigne – Of the three songs I know by this name, here is the worst by a long shot. And it is isn’t awful, either. The chorus and bridge are a mid tempo drag, but the chorus is a winner. Apparently these are all major break-up ongs after her failed marriage.
Summer Rain – Matthew Morrison – Loopy lover’s rock tempo for a lousy song by a ho hum actor with no voice.
Country Song – Seether – Country blues dragola.
The Race – Wiz Khalifa – Apparently, this guy is a one hit wonder and this ain’t that.
Civilian – Wye Oak – Prog drag ala Radiohead meets Portishead without the dub or the synths.
The Birds – Elbow – Never much cared for these self-important mushholes -very Radiohead-y as well. Opening for U2 at Glastonbury, so if the fans aren’t unconscious from the heat and booze by then, the music can put em to sleep.
Homeboy – Eric Church – Eric has a great country twang and when he gets the right song, he can crush it. This isn’t the right song.
Boom (feat T. Pain) – Snoop Dogg -What gives with hip hop? It can’t be me, it has to be the rappers. Snoop has nothing left to say, everything he does sounds exactly the same as something else he has done and his voice is so distinctive, he, like Dylan, can only sound like himself. The song ain’t bad because T. Pain is terrific on the chorusses.
Shilo – Neil Diamond – From The Bang Sessions (that brought us Van Morrison’s early demos). Except these aren’t demos so I can’t find any excuse for buying these demo remasters. And I wish i could. TRACK OF THE WEEK
No Cigarette Smoking In My Room – Stephen Marley – You can’t blame the kid for trying… er, no, wait, he isn’t a kid any more. Just awful.
Jam (Turn It Up) – Kim Kardashian – Since this is all production designed, autotuned, bpmd, etc., how can it be this bad? It doesn’t seem possible.
Mine Smell Like Honey – REM – Those acoustic guitarsm that etheral and yet withering melody, the segue into the chorus. Just perfect.
