New Music Week Of February 22nd: Harpies by Iman Lababedi

Good Intentions Paving Co – Joanna Newsome – The harpist songs are as intricayely desiged as Judee Sill’s were but much, much more twee. Seven minutes out of a one hundred and twenty minute triple album, it is seven minutes of relentless weirdness and dog whistle pitch vocal doodles, as if Tori Amos and Sarah McClaughlin had a baby. Needless to add 7 is no longer my favorite number.

Roses – The Rocket Summer – I am absolutely an agnosyic when it comes to Bryce but this is much better than the relentlessly emotionalism of “Wall” off the same album. Sorta cruching towards salvation with a flock of girls following him.

The Lucky One – Doug Keith – A shaggy keyb based rock ballad from the former bass player with the punk rock band the Gods Hate Kansas, Doug Keith has an emotional charge through this pretty but weathered charmer.

Rise Up (feat Tom Morello) – Cyprus Hill – Imagine what you think this sounds like. That’s what it sounds like exactly. Electric guitar and three rappers who have seen better days. Yep, the only guys who smoke more ganj than Snoop are back.

Something Like A Party – School Gyrls – There was a time no one would doubt for a moment this was a Disney band. Too, much production, thumping bass and drums, three girl singers doctored beyond human recognition. Well, it isn’t. A fake band from a Nick Cannon produced Nickelodeon TV movie, it seems that the Cable Network have finally woken up to the tween market. Nothing much but if you are gonna be nothing much be nothing R&B much.

Tragedy – Peter Wolf and Shelby Lynn – This is like a lost oldie you can’t stop playing. Shelby sounds great -I’ve always loved her voice, her material is what annoyed me. SINGLE OF THE WEEK

Ball (feat DJ Khaled and Schife) – Jim Jones – I’ve always loved DJ Khaled, Jim Jones not so much. But this is extremely ordinary Fittyish gangsta.

In The Sun – She And Him – Sure Volume One was fun, cute covers and Zooey -we owed her one because she was so sweet in “Elf”. So she got one. This is a magic trick where you know how it’s done.

My Chick Bad (feat Nicki Minaj) – Ludacris – So is this. Give Ludacris’s battle of of the sexes “How Low” and pass on this one.

As We Enter – Nas and Damian Jn – Maybe Nas won’t pay Kelis the support money he owes her and his own child because of years of crap product like this reggaeton move.

Empty Walls – Serj Tankian – Symphonic sludge.

Put Em Up – DMX – All these years later and he still has the best howl in hip hop.
