New Music Week Of February 1st, 2010: Go Ask Alice

Alice – Avril Lavigne – Well now, this is pretty brutal isn’t it? Some wiseguy on itunes said she sounded like a bellowing elephant. Funny stuff but more like a bellowing robin red breast. Let’s hope this is NOT indicative of what we can expect from the rest of the Tim Burton soundtrack.

Knockout – Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj – Nicki -the Young Money posse member- sounds a little icey and her rap in the middle isn’t all that but Lil Wayne comes as close as possible to a real merge of rap and rock star. “Once you go black you never go back,” he claims and I believe it.

Rose Garden – Nick Jonas and the Administration – How bad is this? Dan Aquilante gave the album three stars, that’s how bad it is.

Bleeding A Girl – Keeley Ryan – I think that despite it being so upbeat, and despite the cheeky title, “About A Girl” was the wrong choice for the first single off her upcoming album Twist. “Bleeding A Girl” is a superb pop ballad that hooks you the first time round (the background oooohs) and hasn’t let me go yet. Song Of The Week

Acts Of Man – Midlake – This is a haunting and difficult opening number of the new album. It sounds timeless yet obtuse -if Keeley waits for you to come to her, Midlake just don’t care.
