Natalie Portman: This Actress Will Save Your Life -by Alyson Camus

Natalie Portman? I see her everywhere lately, she has a movie out of course and no more than 3 upcoming films in 2011, and I see the billboard of one of them everyday.

But she has a long term connection with music.
In the movie ‘Garden state’, she is the one who is lending her headphones to Zach Braff when listening to the Shins’ song ‘New slang’, telling him that it will change his life. The movie definitively made the Shins more exposed, but she has never wanted to get any credit for this as she said in an interview that the Shins were the ones who created their own success.

In 2007, she made an apparition in Paul McCartney’s video ‘Dance Tonight’ from his album ‘Memory Almost Full’, as a ghost girl exiting a box and following Mecca in his house.

In 2007, she put together ‘Big Change: Songs for FINCA’, a charity album with16 songs from artists like Norah Jones, Antony & the Johnsons, Vetiver, Beirut, Tokyo Police Club, M. Ward, Rogue Wave, Devendra Banhart, and even a Shins remix, in order to promote the organization dedicated to providing financial services to the world’s lowest-income entrepreneurs.

then after starring in the video for ‘Carmensita’, a weird cartoonish Bollywood romance where she plays an Indian princess dancing on a Spanish-speaking folk tale, she began a relationship with songwriter Devendra Banhart.

An indie rock band, which has now changed its name to Brite Futures, even found the moniker ‘Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head’ quite trendy for a while.

In interviews, she has said to be close friends with many musicians like Lukas Haas, Moby, and Norah Jones with whom she did a movie ‘My Blueberry Nights’, and has cited as all time favorites Stevie Wonder, Radiohead, and the White Stripes. But she has also admitted to listen to dirty rap/ obscene hip-hop like the Ying Yang Twins. And this has led Ghostface to dedicate a new song “Stapleton Sex” to her.

Right now everybody is talking about her because she is engaged to ballet dancer Benjamin Millepied, the choreographer of her movie ‘Black Swan’, and I bet we will hear even more of her in 2011. And what more do you want? She is intelligent, an activist, a music lover and a vegan! Here is that famous scene from Garden State:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ziwr4f5eR0M
