My Michelle – New Wave from The Chinese Border -by Iman Lababedi

Do I have a problem with My Michelle, the Moscow band who started their career from their hometown on the Chinese border?

I have a few.

1. I don’t know what they are sining about because they are singing in Russian.

2. I can only stream their music.

3. I don’t quite enjoy the way the language sounds in a pop setting.

Anything else?

No, I think they are fucking brilliant. A gluey synth 80sish bloop on pop. Obviously, this is a Westernized veneer on a Russian concern, but it works without exception on the three tracks, I’ve heard. Especially on “California” -where the only word I can understand stands out.

So does lead singer, Tania Tkachuk. She heads up the Cardigans, Blondie, the Cranberries and I can hear why… though only just.

My Michelle’s slogan is “All God’s Children Can Dance”. Guess they’ve never been to a Prince concert.
