Caitlin Rose Is Smokin’

1. Helplessness Blues – Fleet Foxes – An aching secular spiritual.

2.One Night – Bryan Ferry – I was in 1950s rock and roll mode last weekend. This Presley cover from 2010 halves the distance. Best line: “Don’t call my name, it makes me feel so ashamed”.
3. All I Want – A Day To Remember – The sort of song that pushes a band front and center.
4. Spare Me – Caitlin Rose – An ex called me just to tell me to listen. She sounds like a proto- Iris Demint without the faith.
5. Competition? – Tinie Tempah – The entire Sexy Beast Vol 1 EP is a study in transcending the Grime genre.
6. Young Adult Friction – The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – A band defines themselves within the moment.
7. The Boat That I Row – Neil Diamond – “I’m saying these things so you know me, baby…” sounds less preening when Lulu sings it. But the ocean/notion rhyme is perfect by any one.
8. Push – Avril Lavigne – Sure, it’s prosaic, and sure, Mandy Moore’s Wild Hope mined the exact same terrority to much better effect. But this is a very good song, and the negative reviews went too far.
9. With You – Marsha Ambrosius – Just got a tix to see her at Irving. You should do the same before it’s too late to catch her in such an intimate setting.
10. Big Girl – Yuck
