We all know the form by now, everything the Stones did from inception thru Exile is the greatest rock of all time, except for Satanic Majesty’s which isn’t.
Everything after is all over the place but certainly there are moments over the 30 odd years.
So I woke up in a Stonesy mood…
1. Connection -An obtuse drug reference hidden as al ove song with the swaggering Jagger sounding TENTATIVE…
2. Everybody Needs Somebody To Love – Yup, Jagger was covering Solomon Burke before you were born. Also: Bill Wyman starts showing off about now.
3. High And Dry – Definition of high jinx and when people say Jagger’s natural instrument is neither his dong nor his voice but his harp, they point you here.
4. Rip This Joint – The greatest band on tour song ever written by any one ever. When you listen to it? You lose control. “Flip flip, flippity flop… arrrrrgggg LET IT ROCK”
5. Blue Turns To Grey – One of the great heartbreak songs -and very true, that’s how love lost feels over a period of time. How great? Cliff Richard covered it.
6. Live With Me – Even great at blues work outs other bands simply suck at.
7. Prodigal Son – “Can you diiig it? Yeah, alrriiiigh…” Gospel song sung with a bewildered indifference… live version off Yayas by the way
8. Far Away Eyes – Gram Parsons woulda loved it.
9. Out Of Time – I think I could make a case for Aftermath (UK Version) as being the greatest album ever. Today, 2010, rock doesn’t know how to teeter on hard grooves, steely ballads, class structures, volcanic waste… It can do many things today, but it can’t do this.
10. We Love You – Guitar jail doors slam shut on Jagger and Richard, jailed for possession and facing two years in the slammer, this superb piece of psychedelia was their response.
