Look, I didn't much like his last one, Feeling Mortal, all that much myself, and if I hear "Sunday Morning Coming Down" JUST ONE MORE TIME… but, I saw Kris Kristofferson blow Geoge Jones off stage at Carnegie Hall in 2006 and I will stick on to that comment the caveat that Jones had ONE ARM IN A SLING. But even so, I had waited my entire life for that concert and Kris with every reason to be just a nuisance was brilliant with just a guitar.
Plus, you know the hits as well as I do. If all he had ever done was give Janis Joplin "Me And Bobby McGee" the man would be a legendary figure and he did a lot more than that. At 76 years old we won't have him forever.
Feeling Mortal is excessively moribund, it is a downer, and it is all about time. Perhaps we should tip our titfer but really, I think aging as a subject matter is over rated. It's like people are thinking "Looking back over my 76 years of life…" as if anybody is gonna get THAT MUCH SMARTER, once they hit 30. They aren't really, they just stop growing bigger and start watching their bodies rot away.
And watching our stars grow old, I dunno man. It can be pretty uplifting but it can also be pretty fucking depressing. Jones was depressing, so was Ray Charles, Aretha sure wasn't.
And neither was Kris, though he was not quite 70 at the time.
Either which way, a must see artist in 2013. He is playing the Concert Hall on West 64th street, Saturday June 15th, and while we will get the new album, we will get a lot of other stuff as well.
