I often find myself disgusted when I ask people who their favourite band is, and it's a mediocre one-hit wonder or something worse. I usually am shocked by some of the horrific music people around me enjoy. Alot of individuals don’t feel the need to learn what they like, rather than just going with the norm. It’s a shame how people don’t care enough to realize that good music actually exists, and bands that deserve to be in the place of Green Day or Justin Bieber are starving artists. It’s a common lament, but this day and age, with so much access to technology, society really needs to get a grip.
Here's the top three bands that deserve legitimate recognition:
1. fun. It took them so long to finally have a single on the radio that now everyone knows the words to. They most certainly haven’t “made it”; their one popular song is probably the worst tune they’ve ever written. Their record Aim and Ignite, the second greatest album of all time, is often pushed aside and forgotten because everyone’s screaming “TOOONIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT WE ARE YOOOOOOUNG” and it’s terrible.
2. Bayside. They’ve shaped so many upcoming bands, and they have been around for nearly forever. They’re always pushing and making new music and on tour. It blows my mind that people don’t see how beautiful their lyrics are, how unique their sound is, and just how flawless they are as a whole.
3. Taking Back Sunday. Recently, they celebrated their 10 year anniversary of their album Tell All YourFriends, which was a revolutionary album that bumped up a lot of bands from being stuck in an awkward punk/rock/alternative phase, and moved the genre forward. They’re truly warriors to be so subversive to the same old, same old.
Hopefully, people will eventually realize that what they’re listening to is nothing more than a weak attempt at making billions of dollars, and that music is there to inspire you- not just make you want to dance.
