Moses Campbell Will Make You Young Again by Alyson Camus

Among the many local acts that are going to perform at the Sunset Junction Fair, Moses Campbell will take the Fold Stage at 2 pm on Saturday.
Their band name sounds like a biblical character or an obscure folk singer, but they are in fact a LA six-piece band that defines its musical genre as ‘crust pop’; it sounds delectable, at least something I would eat! But I have heard about crust punk but never about crust pop, could it be because they are playing pop with the energy of a punk band?
I never had the chance to see them live although I was planning to at one point earlier this year after just listening to one or two songs on their myspace page. Their music, full of exuberant energy, releases a sort of positive freedom as they play their catchy tunes with a frenetic fervor. Some kids are still truly excited to play music!
Sean Solomon, Daniela Jimenez, Pascal Stevenson, Miles Wintner, Pauline Lay, and Andrew MacKelvie are extremely young, just straight out of high school, but have released their debut album ‘Who are you? Who is anyone?’ on the Smell’s olFactory Records at the beginning of this year. How is this possible?
Their eclectic use of instruments (they use violin, glockenspiel, accordion, and musical saw beside the usual electric, acoustic guitars, drum, and bass) gives to their songs an original signature, with happy accordion riffs behind the sadder string arrangements.
When I listen to their catchy tunes (and I have the impression to have already heard some of them before, but I am not saying this in a bad way), it feels like a party, an explosive outburst of joy and youth.
So don’t you want to be young again? Just listen to the cheerful ‘And it’s over 1’ or ‘Dano’s the man’ and if you’re in LA go see them live next Saturday at the Sunset Junction Fair, because I have heard live is what they do the best
