Modern Cover Songs by Mary And The Boy

Three classic songs. Three covers. Two young writers. One review.
The Magpie sez:
“Mrs Robinson” by Simon and Garfunkel is one of the greatest songs ever. It’s a tie between this one and the Lemonhead’s cover. Fantastic, catchy, and great to bop along to no matter where you are.
The boy sez:
Mrs. Robinson by The Lemonhead is such a catchy song and my favorite components of the song are probably the bass and vocals. The bass sounds very cool and goes along great with all the other sounds and doesn’t sound out of place or awkward at all, which is awesome. As for the vocals, his voice is enjoyable and he clearly has talent as portrayed in this song. Overall, it’s an incredibly addicting song, upbeat, catchy, and an excellent message is delivered in the lyrics.
The Magpie sez:
The original version of “I Fought The Law” by the Bobby Fuller Four I must say I like a lot less than The Clash’s version. The Clash just added so much more and this one just isn’t as good.
The boy sez:
“I Fought The Law” by The Clash is such an incredible cover. As soon as I heard the drum intro, I knew that I was going to be blown away and the song was going to be fantastic. Boy was I right. It wasn’t just the drum solo that made this song great, everything about it is wonderful, especially the vocals. Since it’s sung by those with British accents, it makes it sound gorgeous and that’s vital. Without a talented vocalist singing as well as they can, a band would be practically nothing cause the main thing you will hear is vocals. Overall, this is one of my favorite songs due to the tempo of the song, all instruments are well balanced and flow together well, and the vocals.

The Magpie sez:
Bow Wow Wow’s version of “I Want Candy” I also like better than the original. With their cool haircuts, great energy, and the way they made the song their own makes it that much better.
The boy sez:
“I Want Candy” by The Strangeloves is a catchy and upbeat song that anyone can definitely get into quickly and start tapping their feet to it and if you are like me, start drumming to the beat. The percussion through out the song have a nice tone to it that goes great with the song. This cover incorporates a few more things to the usual line-up of the guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. It adds the saxophone and some other percussion that just add to the already wonderful sound of everything else. This song just has a great beat, its very catchy. It is no surprise it’s one of The Strangeloves biggest hits.
