The Mix List week of May 18th, 2009; Best Sets Ever #6; more people I don’t like but maybe should

The Static Age – Green Day (“21 Guns” pretty lame on SNL last night)
Get Down – Cam’ron
On the Road To Find Out – Cat Stevens
Softer, Softest – Hole
Good Ol’ USA – Billy Joe Shaver (this guy is a minor revelation)
The Dream Of You – Bob Dylan (the keeper off the newbie)
Missisippi – Sheryl Crow (a hot dylan cover does not a career make)
Big Momma Thang – Lil Kim (she had it going on)
Formed A Band – Art Brut
Paranoid – Jonas brothers (play nice children)
Stillness Is The Move – The Dirty Projections
Jar – Green day
Walk Right Back – The Everly Brothers

What does it take to blow Simon and Garfunkel off stage? It takes the Everly Brothers stunning six song set in the middle of S&Gs set at MSG December 3rd, 2003. I, not unlike S&G, worship at the alter of Don and Phil and not just the lovely harmonies and the saving grace of the somewhat fallow late fifties very early 60s but a clutch of clasic songs: “Wake Up Little Suzi,” “Walk Right Back,” “Cathy’s Clown,” “Bye bye, Love”. Although, if memory serves, they didn’t play with S&G, on this night the Everly Brothers picked their pockets, sounded great and seemed so pleased to be back. It was terrific. A rock solid set that S&G couldn’t quite match.

Incidentally, rather than have an intermission more big bands should have an opener do a middle set instead of an intermission.

Foo Fighters opening for the Stones, Sheryl Crow opening for Eric Clapton (and Bob Dylan). May I just say UGH!!! Interminable sets filled with crap songs. There was a time in the mid-90s I couldn’t throw a rock without hitting Grohl or Crow boring an audience to death. It lead to a long term antipathy and if there is a great album (there are a coupla songs for each) out there I aint heard it.
