The Mix List February 2009: Before there was ROCK NYC there was everything else

Just for the heck of it and because The Beatle post took so much out of me and I’m not in the mood to start in on Thin Lizzy so here’s a mix list from the winter of 2009 -literally months before I started this blog. I miss the old days, I was younger then, innocent, life was one long song…
Pull The Wool – Right On Dynamite – A young power-pop group with a ton of melodies all of which are on the EP and this one is maybe the best with a great jangly intro and a raucous chorus.
Everybody Loves A Winner – William Bell
My Medicine – Snoop Dogg – From “Ego Trippin'” this is Snoop at his best, he sounds coolly druggy on this country romp dedicated to Johnny Cash: “The More dedicated, the more medicated…”
I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’ -Scissor Sisters – Leo Sayer lives on and lives well on this great pop unhyphenated stroke.
Zero – Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Lebanese Blonde – Thievery Corporation – My young pal Bari Wartell introduced me to these dance dub folks with a Middle Eastern slant on this song, dub a little lighter, drum machine a little more insistent.
I’m On A Boat – The Lonely Island
Everybody Loves A Lover – The Shirelles – Lennon loved em enough to rip off “Mama Never Told Me There’d Be Days Like These”
The Middle – Jimmy Eat World
Can’t Stop Feeling – Franz Ferdinand –
I’m Bad – Last Vegas – My pal Todd swears by em, me, I think they give hair metal a permanent wave.
Dinner At Eight – Rufus Wainwright – After seeing him on Costello’s talk and song program “Spectacle” I finally got it. This haunting song about a dysfunctional father and son relationship is one reason why.
So Quiet In Here – Van Morrison
Beach Baby – Bon Iver
La Sonnabula – Cecilia Bartoli – Vincenzo Bellini was a great opera composer who died at the age of 34 in the 18something or other, Cecilia Bartoli a spectacularly gifted Mezzo-Soprano, and this except stunning…
Lost – Coldplay with Jay-Z Geez… if this is what the hoi oligoi are up up to count me among the great unwashed.
He’s funny That way – Diana Ross
We’re Here To tell You – Duncan Sheik
Crack A Bottle – Eminem and Dr. Dre
Right Round – Flo Rida – This is why the 00s are better than the 80s.
The Mountain – Heartless Bastard
Get On Your Boots – U2 – A slight but energetic rave up a la “Elevation” with one of Bono’s slight of hand wisecracks we don’t get nearly often enough “I don’t wanan talk about war between nations… not right now”! U2 forget how far humor and self-depredation wll get you.
30 Days In The Hole – Humble Pie
Tin Soldier – the Small Faces
Dead And Gone – T.I.
May You Never – John Martyn
Just Wait Til Next Year – John Maus – A strange, experimental guitarist working the singer/songwriter circuit.
Set To Fail – Lamb Of God – This reminds me of punk because it’s fast and loud and has no black influence, it reminds me of hardcore because it has no melody and it reminds me of hi hop because the hook is rhythmic.
My Life Would Suck Without You – Kelly Clarkson
New Paint – Loudon Wainwright III
No Future – Titus Andronicus
We Are beautiful, We Are Doomed – Los Campesinos
C Is the Heavenly Option – Heavenly I prefer this too Los Camps cover of it because I find a confusing song more confusing still by Los Camps gender hi-jinx.
