As is pretty well documented by now, I am not a big fan of either Best Coast or Marnie Stern though I can imagine changing my mind about either.
However.
The Impulse interview by Marnie, Alyson quoted yesterday, bears a bit of scrutiny.
Here it is: “Ok, Best Coast, I see everywhere. What’s with her? […] So that’s why she got famous? Is she famous? Like what, because buzz is different. […] I heard a song and was like, ‘Are you joking me?’. That’s unacceptable, that’s unacceptable. That’s not showing any part, that’s unacceptable. You might as well then be an 80s hair metal band saying ‘I want pussy.’
Lessee here.
“I want pussy” is the first and greatest theme behind rock. And I might add that Ray Charles broke from Gospel to create r&b for the sole purpose of writing “I want pussy” over and over again. It might be sexist. It might be belittling to women. But its sexism has zero to do with hair metal or hip hop or any other genre Cmon guys, wanting pussy is the sole reason for the human species. And it is the guiding force behind rock: it is its energizer bunny.
As for Bethany, if her great theme is “I want a boyfriend” -how does that make her any different than, say, Liz Phair, or Peggy Lee, or Marnie Stern for that matter? Or Bikini Kill: BKs’ sexual orientation doesn’t change anything
“I wish he was my boyfriend” is a completely acceptable sentiment. I can’t believe I am defending it. Amy Klein of Hilly Eye has interviewed Marnie for some publication or another. I hope but doubt she pulled Marnie on it.
