Last Thursday rock nyc had its first show, presenting Cheri Dahl. It was a great success every which way (but financially) and now I have been setting up bands for future gigs. High on my list is Tomas Doncker, Joe Steinhardt, and Jack Phillips, and a little further down the line Winter Of The Discontent (Mary Magpie’s band) , David Bronson, Dan Whitley, the Normal Living, Eric Contractor and maybe Amy Klein and Claire’s Diary. I haven’t actually mentioned this to all the names on this list so who knows what their thoughts are!

But I knew from the start I wanted Lizard Kisses. I want to tap into that entire Bridgetown lo-fi scene with no name scene.  I saw the lo-fi titans Marc Merza and Cory Siegler at their Brooklyn apartment, Kevin Greenspon was playing there as well and introduced me, and I wrote at the time I noted that the band was ethereal without being fragile, and I might add now that their DIY aesthetic has deep musical roots. It is really a wonderful thing and I just bought their EP Loving Creatures released in March and their split seven incher “Loosen” released Friday! All the songs are just wonderful, melodic and haunting, quietly beautiful but not ambient. “Over And Over” off the EP sounds like a 1960s Cilla Black cover, without Cilla Black or the back up band and stripped of everything till it’s just a voice and a guitar lick. If that sounds like your thing you are really in for a treat.

So any way, I got in touch and it looks like they will be performing a ” rock nyc presents” gig. These rock nyc gigs are music criticism by other means, we will get you out of your house and into a friendly atmosphere where you can pal around with the musicians and make like minded friends.

Robert L. Ross’ review of Cheri Dahl’s performance will be up in on Monday and I will post the dates for the concert series once Donna McElroy, my main partner in crime, figures it out. Meanwhile you can stream or purchase Loving Creatures and “Loosen” here:
