I was disappointed but not surprised by the UK's callous refusal to a moment of silence to the innocent Israeli athlete's killed by the PLO in a massacre at the Munich Olympic Village. AN atrocity that occurred in about as close to real time as you could get.
The UK decided for an impromptu moment of silence a couple of days earlier after relentless pressure from the US.
All well and dandy but the Opening Ceremony began with the William Blake poem, "Jerusalem" from 1804, with music by Hubert Parry in 1916 (ergo in the heart of WW1) in which posits that Jesus may have visited Glastonbury with his Uncle during the "Lost years". Thereby creating a Jerusalem in the UK.
If the British can begin the Ceremony with a song about the rebirth of an Israeli city, why the Olympic Committee can't honor the fallen athletes is a political mystery and mind field. It is repulsive.
As opposed to the poem itself, and here is is.
And did those feet in ancient time.
Walk upon Englands mountains green:
And was the holy Lamb of God,
On Englands pleasant pastures seen!
And did the Countenance Divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among these dark Satanic Mills?
Bring me my Bow of burning gold;
Bring me my Arrows of desire:
Bring me my Spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my Chariot of fire!
I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In Englands green & pleasant Land
