Listen Up: 7-29-12

1. Burnin' Hell – The Bootleggers – Featuring the one and only Nick Cave, who wrote the screenplay for the movie whose soundtrack this is on. This is a hard boogie with a vicious violin steamrolling through it – Grade: A-

2. Magpie – Beth Orton – Beth tries to take back the indie chick folk crown off Laura Marling, and comes close in the verses if not the chorus – Grade: B+

3. Rusty Stab – Shinobi Ninja – Redefines a rap paradigm of scratch and beats – Grade: A

4. Battle Scars – Guy Sebastian and Lupe Fiasco – No "Lambourghini Angels", this is the sorta slow fuse Eminem was selling on her last album – Grade: B

5. Ice (feat Lil Wayne – Kelly Rowland – So ephemeral, you forget it while you're listening to it – Grade: C

6. Madness – Muse – "We are defined by the fact that we can't be defined by anybody"., Matt Bellamy claims. Let me help: U2 wannabes – Grade: A-

7. Anything Could Happen – Ellie Goulding – This could follow "Lights" up the charts – Grade: A-

8. Straight Tequila Night – John Anderson – This is so good, George Strait should cover it – Grade: A

9. Something's Coming – Barbra Streisand –  Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing her in Brooklyn, but I just watched the opening of Albert Brooks "Defending Your Life" and that's why I'm listening to it again – Grade: A-

10. Right Above It – Lil Wayne And Drake – This inspires Mike Phelps? Really? I guess, at least it explains the under the influence pix from a coupla years back – Grade: B
