1. You Don't Know How It Feels – Tom Petty – Maybe a decade past his prime, Petty was still hovering between Southern boogie and Florida's Springsteen. Or, if you prefer, the Wallflowers. And here, he gets it all in a rock star confidential that spells out the quandary he faces: "you don't know how it feels to be me". Or is that "I'm too alone to be proud"?  – Grade: A

2. Brain – Mellowhype – Left Brain steals this one, with a gorgeous horn – Grade: B+

3. Conchord – Boys Noize – Boys Noize calling card is this song, where he manipulates the synth till it goes flying upwards and out of the track entirely, towards the heavens, where the gods of Asgard wonder why the dogs are howling in the night air – Grade: A

4. Explosions – Ellie Goulding – Here is the money shot: if this ballad hits big, Ellie will start entering Katy Perry land despite an iffy second album – Grade: B-

5. Hostages – A.C. Newman – The horns sound like they're off a cheesy 1960s pop song. Which is a good thing – Grade: B+

6. Music To Walk Home To – Tame Impala – I bet they have a PC you operate by foot on stage – Grade: B

7. Walk Like a Giant – Neil Young – "What haven't I done on a track? I know… whistle!" – Grade: A

8. Doom And Gloom – The Rolling Stones – You can take the boy out of the Louisiana swamps but… Grade: A

9. Misfits And Lovers – The Wallflowers – Why does Jakob need the Clash to continue his attempts to become Tom Petty? – Grade: B-

10. Some Other Time – Blossom Dearie – From 1959, by Comden and Green, and still completely glorious – Grade: A+
