Not for nothing? But a week after Lester Bangs died, I drove back from New Jersey with Marshall Crenshaw in his Beetle. The concert? He opened for NRBQ and Dave Edmunds
I know you're sick with envy (if you aren't you're an idiot).
I've run into Marshall a number of times and he has always been very kind to me though I've seen him testy with other people and he ignored my request for an interview a coupla years ago,
I don't care.
I love melody kings. I am sure you might love rappers or blues guitar players. Melody is like a return, it is circular, and I love the way the sound returns to where it started. And Crenshaw is in a Buddy Holly class. I have bought every one of his albums. Have you heard that voice (the only time I've been angry at Crenshaw was when he said he was only gonna release albums on vinyl) the man is a giant and it is really pathetic he isn't living in a mansion in L.A..
He probably doesn't remember but I've spoken to him on three occassions and for awhile. For me? That's like talking to Buddy Holly. He is one of my heroes. And he was so nice and he isn't neccesarily a nice guy -you can't push him. My problem with his City Winery gig was that he wasn't happy enough,
I would be happy to die to Crenshaw. This man writes em like breathing, and I would be happy feeling conforted by the cicular mode of sound. Crenshaw remains a giant.
