I think we’ve all connected the dots between catholic school girls Madonna and Lady Gaga but can we add David Bowie as well? I don’t know if he is Protestant or catholic but he’s Irish so it’s as close as dammit.
That’s one, here’s the next. Bowie was a gay icon from very near the begining (when he took off the sweater and put on the kaftan), Madonna started her career in the gay dance clubs and rooms like Dancequeria, er, Danceteria and Area. This I didn’t know: I was just talking to my pal from Miami Liam Murphy and he told me that his assistant, who is gay, has loved Lady Gaga since she went to South Beach two years ago and DJd the gay clubs.
FINALLY… Bowie used dance rhythms to great effect at least since Young Americans and definitely after the Chic produced Let’s Dance and his use of the dance, electronica and DJs has been cutting edge since the late nineties. Of course, Madonna and Lady Gaga have never used anything else.
I think it’s a little bit confusing because Bowie is male but this is how it goes: from Bowie to Madonna to Gaga the edge has been dance music. And guilt.
