Lady Gaga And Gender Bending And Old Men At the VMAs

Congrats to Lady Gaga, who finally did something Madonna didn't do twenty years ago: transformed herself into a man. And perhaps more importantly, playing with Jimmy Page. At yesterday's VMA, she opened the show with a terrific "You And I" and dazzled as a man.

Here alter-ego Jo Calderone to be precise.

She makes a rotten and creepy man, but then again, so does Jimmy Page.

Still the song ain't bad and there is something, not brave, but life affirming, about Gaga's destruction of sex and its roles.

This is what MTV said: :Mother Monster emerged as her smoking, swearing, ultra-MASCULINE alter ego, "Jo Calderone", and gave an opening speech wearing casual Serge Gainsbourg-esque, French-inspired suiting before launching into her latest single, the leather harness attired "You and I." Folks, it's as if she BROUGHT BACK MENSWEAR in the first ten minutes of the already jaw-dropping VMAs with a jacket by Dior Homme, pants by Brooks Brothers, and a t-shirt from Uniqlo.

I was pretty impressed and me myself had no idea who it was.

In other VMA news: Beyonce is pregnant (don't look at me) and Dave Grohl is an idiot. His pitch for rock music was so precious I wanted to kick him. Then I went to sleep.

My buddy Steve Diamond mentioned two points: it was of course Brian May playing guitar with Gaga and Annie Lennox did cross dress better
