Marshall Crenshaw portrayed Buddy Holly in La Bamba
Whenever I think of Buddy Holly I think “Peggy Sue”, not simply because I’m a huge fan of his or the song, but more importantly it brings me back to a great moment of time, “My First Date.”
I took my first crush to see the movie La Bamba. I was 13 years old and her mother had dropped us off at the theatre in the mall. I remember I had no idea about the Movie and wondered why my girlfriend wanted to see it. I said outloud. “Why are we seeing this, there’s only going to be old people here.” Right after the words came out of my mouth. An older man stood up and turned around and said. “Hey kid who you calling old?” I felt stupid and apologized and everyone including the man were laughing about it.
Well the movie ended up being one of my favorite of all time. I remember the only song I knew in the movie at the time was “Peggy Sue” and when they played it towards the end of the movie, I remember leaning over to my girlfriend and telling her she was my “Peggy Sue” and while holding her hand I kissed her on the check. She turned to me, blushing and said. “I liked that.” Then we kissed on the lips which was huge at that point in my life.
I also remember feeling so sad after that movie and the talent that was lost on that plane crash. Buddy Holly always stood out the most to me when they talked about the crash, because my dad use to wear his glasses and when my dad was younger he looked like him.
In closing can I name a bunch of Buddy Holly songs or tell you his life story. No! But what I can say is hearing his voice brings be back to a great day some twenty years ago in my youth that I will never forget and for that I am eternally thankful to him.
