Friday night at Downtown LA’s Palace Julian Casablancas played a short set including interval of the eight songs on his new solo album Phrazes For the Young and a coupla Strokes obscurities.The production values of the According to Todd Martens of the LA Times “The visuals impressed, more so because the giant sliding screens allowed for the underground water shots, cartoon-ish cityscapes and kaleidoscope-like prisms that mirrored Casablancas’ intricately weird arrangements”.
Interesting? Sure but in a world of Saint Motels not exactly fascinating.
Still, as always, Casablancas is about the melodies and on the album they were strong and live they are always strong. He is meant to be in town January 2010. It won’t be Bowery ballroom -my bet is two opening acts and United Palace -not Beacon or Radio City for promotional reasons.
