Jenny O at the Satellite on Monday January 24th, 2011: Soulful Tunes -by Alyson Camus

Jenny O and her band had so many problems when she took the stage around midnight at the Satellite on Monday. Her keyboard was not working, the amp was having some issue too, she seemed desperate for a while, then someone brought another keyboard and she could begin her set at last!

Starting a show at midnight during a weekday is not easy, as you have to prove to people they have to stay to see you,… but most of them did actually!
I stayed of course, mostly because I liked her song ‘Well OK Honey’, and it was probably the best song of the evening, although her repertoire seems so eclectic it is difficult to judge. But I was intrigued by this young person who has worked with many LA musicians, and has already self-produced an EP, ‘Home’.

She moved to LA (from NYC) because she liked the ‘longhaired musicians’ who ‘celebrated the past and present’, and she seems very much absorbed by soulful tunes that she sings with a sweet and high voice. Some of her songs may have sounded a little bit too much like a pop song of the 60s, but when she sat behind the keyboard, it was time for even more retro music with a slow ragtime-cabaret tune, or more floating, pinkfloydish songs with soaring vocals, and determined keys. Quite different from the ‘Well OK Honey’ hook, to be honest.

If she was confident when playing and singing, she seemed a little out of place in between the songs, moving nervously, but as soon as she takes her guitar again to sing over that jazzy bass-drum beat of her most famous song, she was all smile, reassured and happy.
