It was 46 years ago today that The Beatles’ “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” went to #1 in the U.S. Recorded in October 1963, this was the first Beatles record to use 4 track recording technology. It was number #1 for seven weeks, and stayed on the charts for 15 weeks.
At one point it was selling 10,000 copies per hour in NYC. Demand was so high, Capitol Records had to “job out” the manufacturing process to RCA and Columbia to keep up.
This also started a year where the Beatles would chart a phenomenal 7 #1 songs.
In the UK it knocked “She Loves You” from the #1 position, marking the first time a band replaced their own song at #1
