Iranian Verbs by Iman Lababedi

Nager has just got out of jail and wants to leave Iran in the worst way in the movie “No One Know’s About Persian Cats”.
And Half an hour into Bahman Gobadi’s reenactment of the band Take It Easy, Hospital attempting to leave the fascist theolgical battered Iranian regime for ANYWHERE IN THE WEST, Nager says getting $24,000 for forged passports and visas (26K for a green card -more if a war starts)  from his Mom in Europe is no problem.
So straight away we know that the strata of society we are dealing with somewhat ratified.
Be that as it may.
A theocracy knows no social strata and playing English language “indie rock” in Tehran is at least a jail sentence and maybe more.
But these 3000 or so  Western influenced bands,  according to one person, are not in it for the politics. They are twenty somethings who have only known the repressive socity they live in and just wanna play rock and have some fun.
Remind you of any one?
Yup, these guys are the ancestors of the first rock and roll stars. They come (not musically but emotionally) from the repressive fifties. This is not political except that when you can have your life destroyed if not ended  for doing what you want, you are forced to be aware of the climate in which you live.
Listening to Take It Easy, Hospital’s first EP, released this January Human Jungle, I will offer it the greatest compliment I can think of and discuss it solely on its own musical terms. And on its own musical terms it is a bit of a snooze. Not bad but not great either. Negar and Ash Koosha are a talented couple but not great singers and while a song like “Television Blues” is pretty strong (with a great very ending!!!) the synth rock is a bit tinny.
You, and the rest of the world, might well love it.
Whatever your take on Take It Easy, Hospital is, these guys are absolutely a real band who have managed to jump the world they were born to.
Eventually, the theocracy in Iran will fall because it is  is a country filled with people like Negar and Ash. Pretty good musicians, or writers, or fashion designers, who just want to express themselves in a country that recently  banned all secular music.
If anybody there can read this and wanna email me their mp3s my address is I might not like it but I’ll take it seriously.
