in Praise Of Pop Music In All It’s Passing Glory by Iman Lababedi

How can people be self-righteous when it comes to populat music.
Getting upset about crafty, passing fancies like B.O.B. or Jason DeRulo oe Ke$ha is like using a machete to kill a fly.
But that’s where we find ourselves.
The only place on this blog where everybody disagrees with me is the charts -pop music. From shark jumper Bob Lefsetz, to Lutherian Brett Jensen to rock journalist everywhere to all my indie rock star buddies: they all agree the charts are pathetic.
But they aren’t pathetic.
Comparing, say, the Ramones to Ke$ha is like comparing La Chinoise to Transformer 2. They might as well be different mediums. Ke$ha might not have a long term career ahead of her, Flo Rida might have the same problem, and though Dr,. Luke almost certainly will, what do I care if all I love “Right Round” (it isn’t: there are a coupla other keeps on R.O.O.T.s but if it was, so what?
This is useful, very cleverly produced, extremely manipulative pop product for people TO DANCE TO SINGALONG TO… why doesn’t it need to do anything more?
When Lefsetz whinges about how these singers won’t last the reply is -THE VAST MAJORITY OF BANDS DON’T LAST. Can we only enjoy bands with long term careers.
This is open ended shit. There is no difference to me, Mister Consumer, between For Science and Major Lazer. All I wanna do is say listen to both of em. I prefer For Science sure, but do I hate Major Lazer because I love For Science.
How can I hate Diplo? I’d love him if only for his terrific Rihinna/M.I.A. remix.
People say I have no no taste in music when I go into the mianstream… when I loved B>E.P and David Guetta on the same playing field as Titus Andronicus.
It is all I owe the pop establishment. To be able to tell you why Drake is not as good as Kid Cudi. WHy Kanye West is better than Jay-Z.
I love Interscope just as much as Saddle Creek. The allegiance is to that thing that we put in our ear.
If Lefsetz doesn’t get that what the fuck does he think he is writing about?
