With all the hype that surrounds 'season premier' the choice of Frank Ocean to rev up the crowd is pretty lame. At this point Carly Ray Jepson or even The Wanted would get more buzz.
Frank Ocean at age 24 has made a name for himself as an outstanding performer, and for coming out as gay on his Tumblr then back and side peddling over his sexuality. He was 19 when he loved that man…why that was nearly five years. I have said it a million times I don't care where a performer sticks any body part as long as when the sound of what they do for a living hits my ears pleases me. Our society cares more about what breakfast cereal people eat than how they sound.
I hate Frank Oceans voice. Yup, this is a tough one. There is no redeeming quality. I had to mute the VMA's when he performed and tonight I stay up to sit through yet another lame ass sketch comedy to be annoyed again. The difference, I get to be annoyed with my right hand man Iman Lababedi. Mr L will listen to anything, literally loves every genre and has more music knowledge then Wikipedia. Used to intimidate me but after three years together I've come to accept the fact he will beat me in Rock and Roll Jeopardy any time BUT and its a big but…that doesn't mean he has good taste in music- just good taste in partners.
Saturday Night Live is a horrible terrible lifeless corpse of a show. This new season begins with Seth McFarlane and some of the most tired sketch 'comedy' I have seen in years. I don't know if its even worth covering the musical guest. I almost feel by watching it I am somehow contributing to its ratings only prolonging its cancelation.
But we are here for the music and I have decided that Frank Ocean was the perfect choice to start off the season- because he sucks just as badly as the show itself.
Sitting on a stool in his eye closed groove I encountered the exact same problem. My brain refused to accept the sound. The song "Thinking About You" was a slow jam from hell. I do really like the video games that surround him though. I think 2 glasses broke in my dining room when he hit some falsetto pitch and my dog came running. Hes awful and there is no redemption. Ever.
And the one thing that is consistant? I hate him, Iman likes it, "He has a terrific falsetto and this is the first real change on modern r&b since Babyface… If the rest of his material was half this good. On stage he is too weird for word… The second song is his overlong, artily distracted and fairly tedious 'Pyramid', proof he has suffered for his rt and now its our turn."
There you have it. SNL season premier just the same as last year.
